Summer of Music - The Festival Trends Roundup
With summer winding down, many people are probably getting ready to head back to school and work and trying to squeeze as much fun in as possible. There have been countless music festivals this summer including popular ones like the Electric Daisy Carnival, Pitchfork Music Festival, Lollapalooza, Vans Warped Tour, Bonnaroo, and many more.
Here are a few of the trends I’ve picked up from recent music festivals:
VIP tickets and upgraded services (VVIP?)
Many music festivals are offering upgraded experiences by creating VIP passes. Recently, the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco, CA offered 3-day VIP tickets which gave fans access to the Exclusive Polo Club that had shade and special restroom facilities. For regular ticket holders, festivals also offered more than just music with a variety of activities. (Bonnaroo had a comedy theater, several lounges to cool off, hair washes from Garnier Fructis, yoga, and even a post office…)
Hoards of People
It seems like more and more people are interested in attending music festivals. Many budget-conscious people will go to music festivals because they let you hear more music from a variety of up-and-coming and established bands for a smaller price than going to separate concerts for each band you like. Festivals are featuring more stages and more music which helps draw more attendees. The 2012 CMA Music Festival set a new attendance record this past June with daily attendance topping 71,000 fans.
Longer festivals
Since more people want to attend music festivals, it seems reasonable that festivals would be extended. For Coachella 2012, festival organizers extended it to two weekends so more people could attend and for monetary reasons (err, read: cash grab?). Coachella will be two weekends again in 2013. It seems like other festivals are trying this out as well. Recently, the Austin City Council voted to expand ACL to two weekends. ACL 2013 will be held over two consecutive weekends in October.
We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer! Let us know what summer festivals you attended and what concerts you are planning on attending in the comments below!
