What a man does for pay is of little significance. What he is, as a sensitive instrument responsive to the world’s beauty, is everything!

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890 - 1937),

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I post this for a few reasons.  First, it’s Howie’s birthday today and I would be remiss (as I have been before, much to my shame) to neglect this.  Second, this is one of my favorite of his quotes.  Howie was not only the Father of Modern American Horror (which would have shocked him deeply, as he was sure he’d be forgotten after his death), but also a devoted art lover and he spent many hours in the many galleries of Providence, drinking in the beauty there, as well as on his long nature rambles outside the city and in the countryside during visits to friends.  Third, I post this thinking about Peter Capaldi as he, in his gentle and profoundly modest way, is so sure it’s the Doctor we love rather than him.  I have pondered for some time today how this sentiment that Howie wrote in the 1920’s goes so directly to what I really like most about both Peter and Howie.  According to his long-time friend, Craig Ferguson, Peter’s a fan of Howie’s, so I thought it fitting.  Of course, what Peter does for a living is, in a very real way, an expression of his responsiveness, and that, I think it why he’ll make such an amazing Doctor.  He’s doing it out of love, and that makes all the difference.
