On the other hand, not everyone has had the benefit of knowing his work as well as the Capaldians do (especially Americans who haven’t had the best of access to his oeuvre for quite as long as other have had), and the premiere hasn’t even aired.  The process of getting to like a new Doctor usually takes a bit more time, and certainly a bit more screen time than just those mere moments devoted to eyes and kidneys.

To those who only knew of the harder roles Peter has played, they’re accustomed to that sharp edge some of his performances have.  They don’t know the genuine warmth of his gentle smile anywhere near as well as they know that snarl and that rictus, and this casts a shadow over him that takes time to resolve in the minds of some folks.  Malcolm Tucker wasn’t meant to be a particularly likable character, even though he came to be loved for his unusual, acid charm.  Stuff like that can really stick to an actor.  It can be good, because it’s got him roles like King Charles I and Cardinal Richelieu, as well as spots either narrating or doing dramatic readings in a few documentaries, but it’s a double edged sword, because of the danger of typecasting.

Still, to like such a radically different Doctor, played by an actor best known for, and even somewhat fresh from, such an iconic role as Malcolm, before we see even one single episode of him takes a lot of trust and a lot of that capacity that not everyone has to see the potential in him.  I think that is, in part, what the World Tour was for: to let the world see and get a sense of the actor himself and the new Doctor in order to put the doubters in the right mindset to see the him properly as the Doctor, as quickly as possible.

It does seem a bit hard to countenance from within the realm of Capaldia, but some folks really have needed a lot of convincing.  He’s 25 years older than Matt Smith, and there’s never been so great an age gap between two successive actors playing the Doctor.  In our superficial, youth-obsessed age, that’s a much bigger deal than it really should be because he’s only 56, but that’s a wall that really needs knocking down.  It’s very hard not to like Peter because he’s so sweet and gentle, with such a youthful and exuberant spirit, and to let the fans actually see that really helps shatter the image of Malcolm Tucker and those odd preconceptions regarding his age.  It’s easy to see that in his interviews for other things he’s done, but for a lot of people, that takes more digging and more research than they are likely to do on their own, especially if they’ve been busy mourning the departure of Matt Smith and suffering from disappointed expectations because they assumed that the Doctor has been aging backwards since 2005.

I think it’s incredibly obvious that Moffat really wants the 12th Doctor to be a success because he feels very passionately about how right Peter is for the role.  I think Capaldians agree on that one.  He wants Peter back for another series, and Peter has said he’d like to do another, too.  I’m certain we agree on that one, too.  But, all that is still up to the BBC.  They haven’t extended the offer yet, and much will depend on the ratings, so all eyes are on them.  Peter is a pretty hot commodity right now because of Malcolm Tucker, and it seems like just about everybody in the industry wants him, but it’s a really big deal to move such a powerhouse character actor as Peter with such a formidable list of credits, to the other side of the watershed hour, from adult programming to programming much more suitable for the kiddies.  Moffat and company are stacking the deck as best they can to help ensure they can get him back for Series 9, but I think that’s why Peter is so nervous.  He really wants the fans to like him, because if they do, he gets to hold onto the best job in television and the dream of a lifetime.  If what we’ve seen so far is any indication, and I absolutely think it is, his future in the TARDIS is very likely to be secure.  I sure hope so!
