Persephone’s Ecstasy, oil on panel, artist designed and finished frame. On display @lastritesgallery for The 13th Hour, opening tonight! I designed this frame with Persephone’s myth in mind. At the top there is an abstraction of a pomegranate, the fruit of the underworld she consumed that forever bound her to the Underworld.

Myth, fable, fairy tale, the collective unconscious are huge influences upon my work. I believe that these tales and dreams draw maps, hold keys, navigate us through life’s oceans; the calms and the storms (hills and valleys for those landlocked). I am conflicted with Persephone’s story. Her abduction by Hades is more than a bit rough. However, who she becomes because of this is fantastic - a formidable Queen of the Underworld whose mixture of sorrow and joy, travels above and below bring about the cycle of the seasons; winter into harvest. This of course mirrors any and everyone’s personal experiences with living in the barren as well as the plentiful.
