With the wild winds we arrived in Canyon de Chelly - a spectacular sandstone canyon that drops hundreds of feet to lush green fields and incredible stands of oak. On the edges of the cliffs, in enormous caves, sit the ruins of ancient Pueblo and Hopi and Navajo settlements. The Navajo still live here, farming the land of their ancestors and raising livestock. We could see the tiny dots of herders, the bells of the cattle rising to the top of the canyon with warm gusts. On the rim we were the only ones - the park seemingly deserted of visitors.

And going back even farther, Michy and I traveled through the Petrified Forest to see where pines from the Triassic period once towered among dinosaurs, flying reptiles and weird river creatures. The fallen trees, and there are thousands, resemble marble and at times speckle the arid landscape as far as the eye can see.
