The Alternative Business Card
A while ago I decided that I needed to be able to introduce myself as more than just another photographer. Sometimes I need to advertise The Alternative Photographer instead of my portfolio. After a bit of planning, and sketching out different ideas, I settled on these handmade and unique business cards. Below is my prototype that I put together before I started printing them in number.
The idea was to use two layers with a window cut in the top layer and a single negative held inbetween the two. However, after making the prototype, I realised that I could introduce a new aspect by putting a window in both sides and allowing the negative to be projected on a wall by shinning a light through it.
To make the cards, I laid out the logo and details in Photoshop and then printed them out on a sheet of A4. The blank cards that I had were then attached to the sheet with blu-tak using the first print as a guide. The sheet was then put back through the printer, this time being printed directly onto the cards. If you’d like to try this at home, you can either buy blank cards, or print directly on to a sheet of A4 card, and then cut them out individually.
Above: The blank cards being attached to the template.
Below: The cards after printing, ready to be assembled.
To put them together, I measured the negatives and calculated where to cut out the window. I penciled it onto a spare card and, using a scalpel and steel ruler, I cut out the template which I then used to make the rest of the cards.
