Have you heard of the North Carolina Civil War History Center coming to Fayetteville? Chancellor James Anderson and Dr. Bertha Miller share their thoughts about this museum in the making here.

These two educational leaders of Fayetteville State University are forefront community leaders that serve on the Board of Advisors and the Board of Directors for the museum.

Recently the organization has asked the public to share their stories related to their mission “to promote [the] understanding of the Antebellum, Civil War and Reconstruction periods through the lives, words and work of North Carolinians from all walks of life.”

Check out the website dedicated to raising awareness about the new museum. The North Carolina Civil War Center is “affiliated with the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, a branch of the North Carolina Division of History Museums.”

I would like to welcome everyone to the first #ThrowbackThursday of Archives and Special Collections at Chesnutt Library for 2015-2016. Since this is the first week of classes, I felt that it would be interesting to look back at what students in the past did in order to prepare to attend Fayetteville State University.

That is, when it was previously known as the State Normal School. Here is an application from that time. It appears very different from today’s application doesn’t it? The head of the school at the time was Dr. E.E. Smith, who was in his third appointment as Principal of the school. Students would attend classes for various subjects including Latin and Rural Sociology. The two-year courses of study were for students intending to become primary grade and grammar grade teachers. The four-year course of study was for students attending high school there.

Flashback Friday with #ChesnuttArchives (11.6.2015)

Hello my name is Nicholle Young and I would like to welcome you to a special Flashback Friday at Fayetteville State University! Chesnutt Library’s Archives and Special Collections department had a booth two weeks ago during 2015 Homecoming that was dedicated to showcasing yearbooks, catalogs, and student newspapers at the Alumni Welcome Center. The years celebrating their milestones include the Class of 1965, Class of 1990, Class of 1995, and Class of 2005.

People who came from surrounding areas and out of state to enjoy the festivities of Homecoming 2015 were welcome at the booth to reminisce about their time at Fayetteville State. Stories were shared, pictures were flipped through using DigitalNC, and a good time was had by all. Alumni from the Class of 1958 all the way to the Class of 1988 and more were able to enjoy the experience.

An exhibit highlighting Robert and Cicero Harris is now available for viewing in the Archives and Special Collections Department on the 4^th Floor.
The exhibit is titled “Early Teachers of the Howard School: The Harris Brothers” and provides a glimpse into their involvement in education in North Carolina. Through research using archival resources in our collection the materials on display were gathered and arranged by **Bianca Monroe**, a student at Fayetteville State University.

Archives Student Spotlight (10.9.2014)

In the Archives and Special Collections Department, student workers have been busy working with papers, books, yearbooks, and images, completing research for exhibit cases and blog posts centered on Fayetteville State University’s history.

Bianca Monroe, a sophomore here at Fayetteville State University, cleaned a valuable book case that contains books dating from 1920s to 1940s. These books have been housed in the Archives and Special Collections since the opening of the current library in 1987.

Little is known about the history of each individual book. It seems the majority of the items were once housed in Joyner Hall and collected by previous libraries which were known as Fayetteville State Normal School Library or the State Teachers College Library here on campus.

#ThrowbackThursday: Hammocks Beach Project

In 1950 the North Carolina Teachers Association, Incorporated was deeded land on Hammocks Beach in Onslow County, North Carolina from Dr. William Sharpe and his wife Josephine W. Sharpe of New York. The North Carolina Teachers Association organized the Hammocks Beach Corporation to operate the property with a charter stating:

“Its assembly, vacation, and recreation facilities [are] primarily for the teachers in public and private elementary, secondary, and collegiate institutions for Negroes in North Carolina who may wish to use the said facilities as individuals or groups subject to regulations set by the Board of Directors.”

Dr. J. W. Seabrook, a previous President of Fayetteville State University, served as the secretary for the Hammocks Beach Corporation. The Charles W. Chesnutt Archives houses several documents pertaining to the Hammocks Beach project that was established as recreational land for African American educational institutions in North Carolina. Hammocks Beach is currently owned and operated by the North Carolina State Parks.

**FSU History: Founding Fathers**
In a short letter written to a local author, an unknown member of the Andrew J. Chesnutt Family describes the beginnings of their father’s legacy in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The letter provides detail about his local business ventures, African American education in Cumberland County, North Carolina, and his eldest son Charles W. Chesnutt.
The letter explains that Mr. Andrew Chesnutt lived in Cleveland, Ohio at the beginning of Civil War. With his parents in Fayetteville, North Carolina he had ties to the southern town and eventually moved back with his family. He opened a grocery store on Gillespie Street but only to suffer from the lack of business from a farming community. Soon he transitioned to gain a better business footing in Fayetteville by purchasing a farm on Wilmington Road and opening a transfer business that transported goods using dray wagons.
During his lifetime, Andrew Chesnutt is noted as serving several offices including being a founding member of the Howard School, a judge of the board of elections, a Justice of the Peace, and secretary of the Zion Methodist Church.
Through the writer of this letter his legacy for education in Fayetteville places him as the forerunner for opening public schools in the area for African Americans. Andrew Chesnutt is described as an educated man who collaborated with six other men to purchase a lot of land on Gillespie Street to construct the Howard School.
