One of the leading dentists of the mid-Atlantic region, Sherwin Kevy, DDS, possesses more than 30 years of experience in dentistry, and has maintained a private dental practice in Montgomery Village, Maryland for nearly two decades. His office serves patients in need of general dental care as well as cosmetic dentistry procedures. After earning a DDS from New York University in 1979, Dr. Sherwin Kevy embarked upon post-graduate training at the Newark, New Jersey-based Beth Israel Medical Center. The Importance of Youth Mentoring By Dr. Sherwin Kevy
Providing adolescents with positive adult role models outside the traditional nuclear family unit has never been more important than it is today. As vital as the parent-child relationship is, research continues to show that having adult role models other than parents in a child’s life greatly increases a child’s social and emotional well-being. More than 35 percent of children in America are raised in single-parent homes, and our society continues to move farther away from a family structure that includes a variety of adult role models in the extended family. Mentoring is often the best way to close the gap and provide youth with these role models.
Adolescents and teens need positive relationships with non-parental adults in order to develop social skills that benefit them well into adulthood. These relationships do not happen overnight. Research has shown that mentoring relationships that last at least a year that are based on building trust and friendship are the most effective, whereas short-term (six months or less) relationships that are designed to produce results (e.g., better grades, improved school attendance, or behavioral improvement) sometimes do more harm than good. Mainly, an adolescent needs an adult that cares and is simply available.
