Hi! I was wondering if you could go in more detail about putting hair dye in conditioner. I'm curious, how much does it damage your hair? Do you have to bleach/lighten your hair for it to show? And what steps would someone take to do it? Any info you have is much appreciated, thank you!

I will answer your questions briefly but then I am actually going to refer you to a youtube tutorial that I believe can answer your questions much more thoroughly.

The dye doesn’t damage your hair, but bleach and developer do. The longer it is on your hair the more damage is done, and I can’t say how much damage it would do because it depends on how dark your hair is and if your hair is thick or thin. Everyone’s hair reacts differently, so for someone the damage might be too much hassle and someone else the damage is just a little annoyance. If your hair is dark, you do need to bleach it for some color to show. I usually go for a bright red so Ive been fortunate enough to only need a high level developer, though it is high enough to damage my hair.

If you do need to bleach your hair to get a bright unnatural color, i suggest putting in the cash and going to a salon for the initial bleaching. It does damage your hair a lot, and if you go to a salon you don’t have to worry about over bleaching it. That way when you want to touch it up all you have to do is bleach your roots instead of your whole head.

If I were you, my first step would be going to a salon for a consultation or to sallys beauty and tell them what you want and ask them the best way to approach it. If you’re dying bright red it is possible to use 40 developer and dye and not have to bleach it. If you’re going to blue or pink or purple and your hair is dark, you will have to bleach it and the salon or beauty supply can tell you exactly what you need for your specific hair type and color.

Last thing I am going to say is if you’re putting hair dye in conditioner as a refresher you just need to drop your vegetable based dye in your conditioner and use it as normal (you will have need to of dyed your hair previously with dye (no developer). If you’re using it to dye your hair after you bleached it this video will help you. Along with a million other questions. Ive watched the whole thing, its a great video and a great lady. Keep in mind you don’t have to be dying your hair pink in order for this video to be helpful.

Helpful tip- in the description of her video she lists the questions she answers and what time she answers them at. If embed isn’t working you can click here.
