Here is the scroll frame I ordered! It looks like the vertical lengths are fully adjustable so that was kind of the biggest selling point since I don’t always work on huge pieces. It’s smaller than it looks since it’s made for someone to sit on the floor and use it. Total dimensions are 65x50x50 cm but the workspace is 50x40 cm (width across x vertical length). My biggest concern is how to attach the cloth to the frame since the seller didn’t specify. Crossing fingers that it comes tomorrow so I can find out!
You’ll most likely have a strip of heavy duty fabric on each rod to baste your fabric to.
If basting is a pain, you can try these: http://www.123stitch.com/item/American-Dream-Products-No-Baste-System-for-Fabric/123-7452
I haven’t tried them yet, so I can’t offer any advice on how to use or if they even work. I just baste my fabric by hand and bitch and moan the entire time.
IT’S Q-SNAP!!
I just invested in a small Q-Snap for my current project, to test it out.
So far I’m annoyed that I have to move it around (which wouldn’t have been as much of an issue if I had gotten a larger size, but I wanted it to be available for small projects), but the ease of moving it is top notch.
There are definitely marks on the fabric and I’m still really nervous about damaging my stitching, but I’ve seen a ton of people say everything will be fine at the end.
I suspect it will be like hoop marks left on fabric from a plastic hoop that interlocks? Hopefully it works out! My q-snap is a made-in-China scroll frame, so as long as I always have enough fabric allowance between the design and the edge I should be ok. It’s really tight so I hope I don’t rip the fabric when I take it off finally. I think yours will be ok too - some steam and an iron will smooth it out fine I’m sure!
The best piece of advice I’ve come across so far is to use another strip of fabric (like a felt or muslin) in between the snap and your embroidery fabric.
It’s made a huge difference in how easy it is to pop off the snaps and I’m definitely less worried about snagging my stitches.
And I’ve got my iron on stand by! (Of course, I just calculated this morning, at my present stitching speed I’ve got about 250 hours to go. /sigh)
