"How did we get from a broadly civic, welfare-minded postwar design culture to 21st century design industries whose essential purpose is to make as much money as possible?"

— Love this review of British postwar design, on show now at the V&A museum in London. British Design 1948-2012: Innovation in the Modern Age tracks the evolution of design in my native land, and as Jay Merrick writes here, shows that “the best of 21st century British design owes almost everything to a stream of bold artistic and manufacturing experiments in a Britain that still smelled of Spam, Player’s Navy Cut cigarettes, and Brut aftershave.” Now there’s a combination. Weird, I suddenly, urgently need to get back to London asap!
