Kürtőskalács, Hungarian Chimney Cakes

Serious Eats posted an article about Hungarian Chimney Cakes recently and I was surprised that I had never heard of this treat. I live in a small town in southern New Jersey with a large Hungarian-American population and am part Hungarian myself, so I grew up eating all kinds of Hungarian goodies. But I’ve never had kürtőskalács. Plus, the sugar-crusted cakes are described as being almost soft pretzel-like, so this intrigued me even more. Being in the Philly ‘burbs you would think that something like this would’ve caught on in our area.

Here’s a recipe if you’d like to try to make your own. I’m definitely tempted to try it myself. Does anyone out there know anyone who makes some mean kürtőskalács? If so, send me their info. I’d love to find out more about how these awesome pastries are made (and learn how to make them myself!).
