On this day in 1776, the United States declared its independence from Great Britain. Now, the U.S. celebrates the 4th of July as Independence Day, an occasion commemorated with parades, fireworks and barbecues.

To highlight this important day in 1776, Lower Manhattan’s One World Trade Center (formerly called the Freedom Tower) reached its final height of 1,776 feet with the recent addition of the tower’s 408-foot spire.
