Every time I had played at a popular concert, I was in a horn section. There are specific spots where you play and specific spots where you don’t play. I’d never been in a situation where I was up there and they said ‘OK, let’s do this song.’ What I started to figure out was something I learned as a kid playing in New Orleans. One of the rules of playing in popular styles of music is that the singer is the most important person on stage – you can’t step on the singer. Then it was a matter of figuring out how I could function in a group context
