I understand your concern, but I do not share it.

I believe that great apps will never be free and people who respect their functions and their developers will gladly pay for them.

You’re actually in the industry and developing apps and have content in the store, so I’m not going to pretend that I know more than you do about the profit margins behind the apps, but in my eyes a developer would put his app on sale to generate interest that would hopefully spur future growth. It’s not about just giving apps away and driving down prices. I think that particularly applies to game developers, where I imagine if I downloaded a game that I really liked the design of, I might feel encouraged to look at the other games by that developer and throw them some money.

I also don’t actually believe that Apple will ever let the App Store devolve into the endgame that you describe. They aggressively protect their image and I’d say that includes making sure the public doesn’t view the App Store as a garbage dump.
