G’day I’m Adam Cleaver

What do you do….. I’m a singer/songwriter/cheese enthusiast
The last song you listened to…… Nest by Young Fathers
The first record/cd/cassette you bought with your own money (must be honest)….. I started buying music quite late on actually, I think it was an Arctic Monkeys album. ‘Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not’ if memory serves.
When in the studio you must have……. Coffee
Your craziest fan moment…… I don’t know that i’ve had any of those…Oh! I was proposed marriage once, but it wasn’t serious. At least I don’t think it was…
What song was a life changer for you… There are quite a few but one that always sticks out is ‘A Case of You’ by Joni Mitchell, it reaches a level of honesty that grips me every time.
What’s your fave Music Video and why… I really like simplicity in music videos. There’s and excellent Hannah Cohen video for ‘The Crying Game’ where it’s one shot of her face in a bath that slowly fills up with water and her hair goes all crazy. It’s brilliant!
Who inspires you musically… I get inspiration from all over the place. The way I write is a result of listening to all sorts of artists. I go through stages, but I often get a lot of energy from people like Fleet Foxes, Fionn Regan, Nathaniel Rateliff, Grizzly Bear, the list goes on and on!
If I could put you on the stage with anyone artist who would it be (alive or dead, bearing mind we have the technology and knowing you can sing)….. I would want to be on stage with The Band at The Last Waltz please. So you can make that happen right?
State one thing that most people don’t know about you…. Sometimes when i’m bored I put my beard in my mouth, turns out that isn’t very well received on a busy train.
Favourite Ice-Cream (this is important)….. This question crops up a lot in life which means that I have a ready made answer. For me it’s no question, mint-choc-chip every time.
Best advice for new and emerging artists… Immerse yourself in the music scene where you are, unity is the only way forward.
Have you ever made a mixtape for a friend….. I’m pretty sure i’ve made a mix tape for a girl I had a crush on in school. From what I can remember it didn’t go down all that well.
Favourite place to listen to music….. On long train journeys. I like long train journeys in general but when you have the right music you can just get lost for a while.
What’s your musical discovery this year…. There is a long list of new discoveries but so far Souad Massi from Algeria is top of the list. Her song ‘Bima El Taaloul’ is just beautiful.
What’s on the cards musically looking forward for you…‘The Salt Mine’ is out next week so i’m going a bit crazy at the moment. My next EP is due out after the summer. There will be lots of gigs and fun until then!
How would you define success…. Never wanting to take a day off.
Do you think that online social media is an important tool for musicians today… I think it’s the most powerful platform we have to interact with the rest of the world. The fact that you can reach international audiences and be a new artist is amazing!
What do you love about being musicians/singer-songwriters the most…. The sense of peace after writing something that I love. And waking up late…
Who would you have cast as yourself in a movie about your life….This is such a difficult question! I’d quite like Emile Hirsch, he’s pretty great.
Do you have a bucket list…. I never made one of those, I think it would be painfully long so I just tend to try new things whenever I can!
