Calling all first-time voters …

image

Update: Voter pledges are coming in! See the live photo wall here.

Never voted? Now’s the time to make a pledge.

People who make a public pledge to vote are more likely than others to actually get up on election day and go to the polls, according to Melissa Michelson, a political science professor at Menlo College and an author of the book “Mobilizing Inclusion."

I’m asking people in Hawaii to pledge to vote as part of our effort to increase the voter turnout rate in Hawaii, where fewer than 50% of eligible voters cast ballots in 2008.

But residents of other U.S. states can help out, too.

If you’re in Hawaii, download this sign.

Print it out and take a picture of yourself holding it.

Upload the photo to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #changethelist.

If you do that, it should show up soon on CNN.com.

Alternatively, you can submit the photo to CNN iReport. Please also tweet the link to the iReport with the #changethelist hashtag.

If you’re not in Hawaii, but you’re a first-time voter in 2012, please send us your photo as well, and use the same hashtag. You don’t need to print out the sign, but you can make one of your own if you’d like.

Tell us in the caption info or on your sign why you’re voting in 2012 and why you think civic participation is important.
