You Have to Join Something

College can be a difficult time socially and meeting people can be hard. By joining a club or an organization you automatically are a part of something that includes tons of people with similar interests.

I transferred to USF after my freshman year at Chapman University and I knew no one here. Rather than join a club or organization that already existed, I decided to make my own. There was no lacrosse team on campus and I thought that it was a no brainer to have here in San Francisco. So, through the club sports department, myself and another guy founded the lacrosse team.

It was by no means easy and it took a lot of work, not to mention stress, but pretty much all of the friends I have made have been through the lacrosse team in some way. Whether it is an actual player on the team, or a friend of other players on the team, all of my friends can be traced back to the team in some way. I definitely wouldn’t have had the college experience I wanted if it wasn’t for being on this team. College can be so difficult and lonely if you just simply go to class and that’s it. There are so many options out there from Greek life, club sports, service organizations, etc.

So I would say it’s a bad excuse to not join something just because their isn’t a club that interests you. Everyone has some interests and if there isn’t a club that fits your interests, just make one. It’ll keep you busy and you’ll meet a lot of great people doing it. You’ll also learn a lot about yourself as a leader and it’s a great resume booster to have “founding president” of [insert club name here]. This school will pretty much let you start a club for anything as long as it’s not harming people in any way. So either join an existing club or start your own!
