Welcome Home!

The dorm floor was the first community I was a part of at USF

My freshman move in day is now a blur of a memory. It was packing my life into my uncle’s truck and running into Phelan Hall to get my card, and finding room 445. All of these are seen in snips, short, and overwhelming. But one of the first things I remember anyone saying was my Resident Advisor (RA) Narcisco knocking on the open door to introduce himself. Even though I was clearly disoriented, with clothes and bedding scattered around the room, he was very welcoming. He said something along the lines of “Welcome to the SII floor on Phelan 4th!”

Even though I am not a part of the St Ignatius Institute (SII), I was a part of their floor my freshman year.  SII is one of four Living-Learning Communities the University of San Francisco offers. These four programs are designed for students to take specific classes with the most of the same students they live on-campus with.

So because all my floor mates were bonded over classes, they all knew each other pretty well and they were a great group to be around. My first friends at USF were people I met on my dorm floor. Especially because during freshman orientation, all the events you go to are with your floor. So welcome to college- here are your first friends!

I was in Phelan Hall my freshman year and now for my sophomore year. The dorm is a great community; you are surrounded by other students who you are sharing a USF experience with. Especially to transition into college, knowing you are in the same boat with the people around you makes for a great community. Plus you are on campus, so you have about a 7 minute commute to class which is the best thing ever. Oh also you have to have a meal plan if you live on campus so that means Ben and Jerry’s ice cream for days.

Also, look how cute you can decorate your space! Color coordination!
