Description was what photography did - first and foremost. You press the button and the camera describes what it’s pointing at. That’s all it really does. It’s what you point it at, and how consistent you are, and how interesting you find subject matter that gives your work a dimension, and a shape, and a reason for being. But in the beginning, all the camera does is describe what’s in front of you. You can’t make it more than it is; it just is what it is.
The Night
So for our first second year project we’ve been set with the brief Communities. The class was then split into groups of seven when we had to decide on a topic. Its fair to say it wasn’t the easiest of tasks as each of us have a completely different preference/approach to photography. The solution to this was coming up with something that was open to interpretation yet would easily be linked to each other. The results to this was The Night.
It was then time to think of a project. After snooping around on the internet I came across a group called Gwent Paranormal. I know what you’re thinking, and no I’m not going to be documenting some spooky house to see if i can capture any ghosts on camera (even though how cool would that be?) The idea is to be able to spend time with the group, get to know them and really see what its all about. The same way you’d document any other group of individuals, mine just happen to like finding the dead.
Here’s the home page for they’re website (http://gwentparanormalgroup.webs.com/)
From what I’ve seen so far they seem like a tight-nit group that are really dedicated to what they do and its something that they’re passionate about. The best way to describe it would be the live of a ghost hunter (a married ghost hunting couple to be precise)
I’m really hopefully for this project and am looking forward to getting stuck in.
Project update
Not sure who exactly I’m writing to right now, but I thought I’d add an update on here about how the project is going… My Polaroid Land Camera 100 just arrived today, so hopefully picture will be coming soon. (Thats when I’ve sorted all of its issues out and if it actually even works!) Thanks to all the replies I’ve had so far, Tumblr has been fantastic as always! There will also be a Facebook group very soon to advertise the exhibition, which will be taking place in Cardiff in a few months time, the exhibition is going to present some top notch upcoming photographers (obviously not speaking of myself here) but there are some super talented photographs coming out this year. There will also be a Website for those who aren’t able to attend the exhibition so everyone gets to have a gander at whats going on! (on a side note if anyone has any experience with LAND CAMERAS, please get in touch)
