Nolan helped me prepare every part of tonight’s meal. I gave him a plastic knife and a handful of tomatoes to cut. He pulled garlic cloves from the bulb. We picked basil from the patio. He plucked leaves from the cut stems, sprayed water on them in a colander, and then dried them. We added the spaghetti to the pot together. He placed the bread on the sheet pan himself. We grated Parmigiano-Reggiano.
Beth & I have been trying hard to give him focused attention now that our time is divided across two children. So I am proud that I included him so much and put a meal together. A top struggle for me is prioritizing household chores and parenting. I joked this weekend about Nolan scheduling play time with us so we wouldn’t feel strained when he is begging us for attention while we are in the middle of work.
