As Women’s History Month continues, we take a look back at the archives of our Lab newspaper for a window into women’s issues.
During our 66 years of scientific advances, Brookhaven Lab’s community of scientists and support staff has, of course, evolved and changed with the decades. Back in August of 1970, in tune with major national trends, the Lab newspaper asked a few of the brilliant women on site how they felt about Women’s Liberation.
The leading photo may be dated and politically incorrect by today’s standards, but the responses in The Inquirer column have aged remarkably little. These statements still resonate strongly 43 years later — albeit removed from the “Women’s Lib” label — demonstrating the ongoing battle for women in the workplace.
Brookhaven Lab remains engaged in promoting the advancement of women in scientific and technical fields, and Brookhaven Women In Science has been leading the way since 1979.
