In anticipation of the Bill Cunningham New York documentary at MoMa’s New Directors/New Films series - a few photos and history. A legend and pioneer of street style photography, I’ve been in awe during every encounter down to courting him via fax to attend events on behalf of former clients.
Ooh I can’t wait for this. I think anyone who has done PR for galas or any big event has a handful of Bill Cunningham stories. I can remember practically tackling a photographer at an event at the Mandarin Oriental when he tried to take Bill’s photo. There was also the one time at Carnegie Hall when someone (cough, me, cough) sent Bill off in the elevator by himself and all hell broke loose over whether something terrible might happen to him in between the ground floor and Rohatyn Room. The last thing you wanted was to make Mr. Cunningham unhappy. He was always very sweet to me, though.
He also lived down the street from me for 3 years, ensuring that I always thought twice about throwing on any old pair of jeans to take the dogs out.

A worthwhile read that gets a lot right, though I cringed my way through the assumptions about PR that are endlessly repeated- even as the piece purports to debunk some of them: The idea that PR is easy, glamorous, a replacement for people who really wanted to go into journalism but took the easier or more financially secure route, or apparently the only industry that presents a decent option for women.
The writer’s own description of her (brief) experience in PR is in itself a perfectly-bundled, little stereotype: “I liked being a 21-year-old who wrote speeches for major CEOs. (They were heavily edited, but still.) I liked the challenge of trying to make a company that makes the vacuums that suck the ooze out of diabetic wounds seem sexy. I admired how put-together my female co-workers were, with their pencil skirts and clean hair*. There were always 100-calorie packs of Oreos in the kitchen.”
The more important question that I ask myself often: why is PR the least-understood - and therefore respected- industry out there?

Very happy to announce that I work here now (trust me, this was a tough one to keep to myself for the past few weeks). I’m beyond thrilled to join the Tumblr team as their resident Communications girl. Drop me a line and say hello!
It’s amazing how much six years feels like just yesterday and a lifetime ago, simultaneously.
In 2011, we were a whopping 25 people (which, coincidentally is the median age of both David and I at that time); an entire company that could fit (sort of) comfortably into one small conference room, count ¾ of its female employees on six feet, and offsite together in one house.
Now, we’re hundreds of people across multiple offices, about to go through an acquisition (again!) and I’m certainly no longer 26. So, while I wouldn’t change the last six years for anything, I know in my heart that it’s time for me to move on to the next adventure.
It’s impossible to sum up six plus years in one sappy tumblr post, so here are some of the greatest hits:

I don’t think I have anything to add that would be 1/1,000,000th as impactful as the stories women have been sharing this week. But please count me as one man standing with you in this fight.
Today I made a $1 million donation to Planned Parenthood. I urge more men to speak up and contribute. Women don’t get pregnant alone, and we owe them much more than our silent support in the political fight ahead.
