“The Bay Area’s SUPERMULE is a tough band to categorize, and that’s just one of the reasons its new self-produced EP, ‘Northern White Clouds,’ ought to be on your permanent playlist. The album is a savvy mix of covers (the title track by Bill Monroe, Bill Withers’ “Use Me”) and original material, including “Train Song” and “Blue Eyes” by guitarist-lead vocalist Yoseff Tucker and “Weatherman” by banjoist Jim Chayka. The roots sound runs deep throughout the album, as you’d expect from three-time Northern California Bluegrass guitarist of the year Tucker and band founder Chayka, a crazy-great banjoist. But clearly, Supermule is much more than a great bluegrass outfit. You also get the superb work by bassist Zach Sharpe; Michael Emerson on keyboards; fiddler Alisa Rose; Rich Armstrong, horns and vocals; and drummer Michael Carroll (notably on “Walk Away”).”
