MESUT OZIL, GOAL ARCHITECT

Ozil is a hard subject to approach, for me at least, as he commands your attention in a very specific way, his assists and his eyes. He is a very distinctive looking person and there is no getting away from that. To do a portrait is to tackle his eyes. To do a full body rendering is to do the same albeit to a lesser extent.

Over the last few weeks I have been sketching out rough ideas for what I could concentrate on, from his posture to his portrait. In chatting to some knowledgable people on Twitter I started to see him as a form of football engineer. When I mentioned this phrase to someone they agreed but said he was more of an architect. This image was quite inspiring.

The path it put me on lead to me taking a step back and re-evaluating what an assist actually was, a creative instinct that moments before was just a thought in someones mind, or a blueprint if you will.

I am happy that I have managed to cohesively illustrate the creation of an assist and tracked it right through to it hitting the net. This specific goal embodies Ozil’s signature as once it crosses the line it becomes an O with an umlaut above it, almost as if he is signing the piece of art he has just made.
