Alright, TJLC-ers, you’re gonna like this.
It just hit me that this could be a pretty straight-forward way of BBC Sherlock telling fans everywhere that sub-text is there for a reason. Don’t you see it? I’m not particularly passionate about Johnlock or whatever so I don’t often read metas or any long textual posts about it, but many of the posts I have read point out that John represents the fandom. In this scene, we see John being told that the subtext he’s been picking up on is now the actual text. Perhaps it’s a parallel of Sherlock/Showrunners telling John/Fandom that what they have been picking up as sub-text (Punch/TJLC) is or will be moved out of sub-text territory into reality.
My ability to explain my realization is poor so maybe caveperson style works better:
Sherlock and showrunners same. John and Fandom same. Scene sub-text (face punch) is show subtext (TJLC). Scene say sub-text real. Maybe show say sub-text real.
In other words:
Showrunners: Johnlock… is real. Didn’t you hear me?
Fandom: I always hear “Johnlock is real” when you play, but it’s usually sub-text.
