Okay, straight white guy festival: Dazzle me.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Goodale Park is the home to an ever growing number of festivals, including the Gay Pride Parade and ComFest.
But a flyer that’s gone up around Clintonville is sending a less inclusive message.
It’s promoting the Straight White Guy Festival. It claims the festival will be held in Goodale Park in September.
Several pictures of the flyers tacked on telephone poles were posted on Twitter.
In a community where the push for equality is on full display, not everyone appreciates the message.
“This kind of thing implies there’s some kind of struggle going on for being a straight white person in Ohio. Straight white people are doing just fine,” said Michael Premo.
Premo heads an organization pushing same-sex marriage. He says the flyer is not productive.
“I think it detracts from the real problems of Ohio that need to be solved, that are being denied their constitutional rights because of who they are, or who the love. And that’s what we really need to work on and this is just kind of a distraction,” he added.

Well, distraction at best and the typical dimwitted fear and/or homophobia at worst.

I mean… chances are it’s somebody’s idea of a joke - a way to poke groups of diversity for their pride days, parades or rallies.

But I wonder:

Can it be done in a way that isn’t terrible?

I mean, not every straight white guy is a confederate flag waving everything-o-phobe. I know some pretty cool straight white guys that have marched with Moms Demand Action, fought for marriage equality and are furious about the border crisis.

What a pleasant surprise it would be if THAT’S what this was about. I doubt it, but what if?

What if it’s a group of straight white guys who will be coming to a park, speaking out for gay marriage? Women’s rights? An immigration solution?

What if this is a bunch of straight while males who are coming to speak out for those who haven’t had a lifetime of entitlement and/or a leg up because of the straight-white-i-tude?

Stop laughing. If you’ve ever plunked down a couple bucks on a lottery ticket, you’ve bet against the odds. Wouldn’t it be great to be surprised?

So come on out, straight-y! Strut your stuff, but let’s see you do it in a non-misogynistic, non-homophobic, non-xenophobic, all-inclusive way. I dare you.

I’ll call your bluff, and believe - just for the sake of the debate - that this isn’t going to be a gathering of people holding poorly spelled tea party signs, blasting Ted Nugent “music.”

Know this: If it happens, and it ends up being horrible, prepare to be mocked as the scared little dinosaur you are.

But if not, kudos!
