A game that needs a manual is poorly designed.

Ha ha. Let me clarify: I was using the word game as a shorthand for videogame. Of course board games need manuals.
Nah, chess just needs a loving friend who will play you 2-3 games on easy mode and then annihilate you over and over until you cry yourself into an anxiety-induced coma.
And then, after years going on and off with it, you’ll start to play it online against strangers and get destroyed even harder.
