Ian Christiel’s profile of Marty, Martin Scorsese: History Man, for BBC4 in 2003. A documentary portrait that explores Scorsese’s influences growing up in Little Italy and his fascination with the history of immigration underlying Gangs of New York. Thanks to Larry Wright for the tip.
Martin Scorsese on filmmaking philosophy, courtesy of the ever-excellent Film School Thru Commentaries.
This isn’t the first time a filmmaker related film to a “composed film” as well as formulating how you see the world into a style of filming. Pudovkin was one of the first known filmmakers who had expressed that idea in his book Film Technique. Consider the passage: “The lens of the camera replaces the eye of the observer, and the changes of angle of the camera—directed now on one person, now on another, now on one detail, now on another — must be subject to the same conditions as those of the eyes of the observer.” —Film School Thru Commentaries
He blew a steamy gust onto his cold, chapped hands, rubbed them together and turned into Jersey Street, a short and narrow stretch of old New York connecting Mulberry with Lafayette. He loves it here. “It’s such a classic New York alley,” he said. “A lot of movies filmed here. I remember sitting up on that window ledge while we played in here. One time, when I was 15, I came in here and found a dead body. It was some guy who got shot and dumped. Jimmy the cop came by and took care of it.” –In Little Italy with: Martin Scorsese; Scene One: A Fire Escape
