Cylindropuntia fulgida var. fulgida is a cholla with widespread abundance throughout the American Southwest, and it is known by a multitude of common names: jumping, tree, chain-link, boxing glove, and jumping cholla to name a few. It is distinguishable from other species by its tendency to form large woody trees with age. Like their cousins, though, they readily break and litter the ground, being carried off by human and non-human passersby. Due to its abundance, a multitude of academic research exists on the species, including the original species description at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
