I feel like the only reason Steph keeps getting smacked down is because she’s the only former Batgirl that the creators are trying to use, because the blue-eyed blonde little white girl is so much more appealing that the (non-neurotypical) mixed Asian girl.

Back before it was widely known that Cass was “toxic” Gail spoke about how Cass was off limits because she was supposed to be in Inc. I certainly think that Grant tried to use her, although I could be wrong. But it is really hard to get a feeling of what actually happened, what with crayon allegories and rumours of toxicness and a general reluctance of writers to bite the hand that feeds.
Needless to say Cass has fans, and most Steph fans want her back as badly.
I think it’s unfortunate that Steph’s absence gets more attention/press than Cass’s, and I think some of it may have to do with her whiteness, but it probably also has to do with the fact that Cass has been more or less absent for a longer time period. I know for me, as someone who started reading DC Comics regularly during Bryan Q. Miller’s run on Batgirl, I’ve never really been exposed to Cassandra Cain, so I’m not as emotionally attached to her as I would be if I had been reading comics while she was Batgirl.
There’s also the fact that Stephanie Brown has a really gruesome history of being treated like shit by DC editorial. Remember that they made her Robin ONLY so that people would care about her more before they killed her off in a degrading, violent fridging. Cass, meanwhile, (from what I understand) has mostly just been a victim of poor characterization (the arc where she was portrayed as a psychopath) and then ignored (the loooooooong period where she was just not around).
I don’t know. The point is they’re both great characters who are not around anymore. I want both of them to come back. :(
