gymnastics, Jennifer Pinches, and the Olympic Spirit

Being there to witness the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team capture the overall Gold for the first time since 1996 was a highlight of this trip for me, if not perhaps a highlight of my life.

And it wasn’t just a national pride thing, either. Although I’m sure that had something to do with it.

It was also the fact that I happened to be seated beside a member of the 1988 U.S. Women’s Olympic Gymnastics Team, and I was sitting three rows in front of retired Olympic superstar Shawn Johnson. And not only that, I was there watching, in person, the competitive greatness of Jennifer Pinches, who is not only an Olympian, she also happens to be a Nerdfighter (and gave the Nerdfighter Salute on worldwide television while awaiting her score).

As a former Paralympian and current Nerdfighter myself, I felt connected by an invisible thread to these individuals and events. We, these athletes and I, have all strived to be our absolute best. We have all been seduced and ultimately inspired by The Quest, and then for some period of our lives given ourselves over completely to the relentless pursuit of athletic greatness that is the Olympics or, dare I say, the Olympic Spirit.
