Marianne North

Marianne was born in Hastings, England, in the year 1830. She was the eldest daughter of a high class British family. Her father was member of the parliament and her mother, like any other wealthy woman of that time, dedicated herself to the raising of her daughters and to living the life.

Her mother was the first to perish, followed by her father a few years later. Marianne was left alone, but with a generous inheritance. It was then when Marianne decided to leave it all behind and to dedicate herself to her true passion, one that she could never exercise: botany painting. 

At the age of 41 she went searching for new adventures and plants all around Canada, the United States and Jamaica. She spent a whole year in a cabin in a jungle of Brazil. Later, in Tenerife, she decided to travel around the world. Marianne travelled for 14 years through all the continents and drew more than one thousand flowers and plants. Her work was donated to the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew upon her return to the United Kingdom. This work can still be seen in two of the exposition halls. She died in her birthplace at the age of 60.
