Saint Mark from the Ebbo Gospels, 9th cent., Carolingian, illuminated page, France.

• The Ebbo Gospels were very different in style, not classical at all, linear nervous Germanic energy is seen, a sketchy landscape, “inspired evangelist” type of scene where St. Mark looks at the tiny lion in the top right corner.  Mark responds to the lion as if experiencing a mystical revelation.
