Survey Shows DTE’s Student Engagement Efforts Pay Off
Recently, Meritful conducted an anonymous survey of college students with the help of DTE [DTE Energy Co. (NYSE: DTE) is a diversified energy company involved in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services nationwide.] This survey was kindly supported by EthioTrack GPS Systems. EthioTrack is a GPS Tracking and Fleet Management Startup. As one of the largest utility companies in the country, we were excited to work with DTE to learn more about student preferences and hear from students that they had interacted with at some point in the past year. Not surprisingly, 42% of surveyed students listed DTE as one of their dream employers and 32% said that a good company culture was very important when considering potential employers, 8% more than any other factor. At Meritful, what stands out to us is DTE’s emphasis on cultivating a good/healthy company culture in all stages, including their approach to college recruiting. Just over 88% of students surveyed attended college within the state of Michigan, and it is among those students that DTE’s commitment to developing relationships with students during the recruiting process is most evident, in fact 81% listed DTE as a dream employer.
How is DTE accomplishing this? By reaching out to both smaller colleges like Alma College and large universities like the University of Michigan, they are connecting with a diverse set of bright and ambitious students through efforts such as attending recruiting fairs and hosting information sessions where they are able to speak more closely with students. In fact over 67% of students listing DTE as a dream employer had a GPA of 3.0+ with approximately 14% having a 3.75+.
The fact that DTE was far more popular as a dream employer than some other large name companies (such as Google and General Motors) may surprise you, but this speaks to DTE’s efforts to connect with students on a number of levels. Going beyond traditional college recruiting fairs, DTE offers meaningful internships and co-op positions allowing them to engage with students earlier on in their college careers. DTE also smartly works with career service departments at different colleges and universities. By establishing relationships with these departments DTE can share information with students much more directly as well as gaining a more accurate picture of student concerns.
In all areas DTE places a high emphasis on maintaining contact with these students, particularly striving to answer questions the students have about the recruitment process. These kinds of “above and beyond” efforts also help students to learn more about DTE as a company and show their skills, something that 45% of students listing DTE said they struggled with in most recruiting processes.
We are excited to announce that we will be continuing to partner with DTE through the fall recruiting season to help further bolster their student engagement efforts. Meritful will provide a technology tool that helps organize and simplify the excellent communication efforts DTE has already put into place. When thinking about how we want to develop Meritful, we recognize how important it is to help students better engage with their dream employers earlier in their college careers. Inspired by the innovative and truly genuine recruiting approach of DTE, we are building an even more robust set of tools for students and employers.
