Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan In Your Movie | NYT

Lindsay Lohan moves through the Chateau Marmont as if she owns the place, but in a debtor-prison kind of way. She’ll soon owe the hotel $46,000. Heads turn subtly as she slinks toward a table to meet a young producer and an old director. The actress’s mother, Dina Lohan, sits at the next table. Mom sweeps blond hair behind her ear and tries to eavesdrop. A few tables away, a distinguished-looking middle-aged man patiently waits for the actress. He has a stack of presents for her.

Lohan sits down, smiles and skips the small talk.

“Hi, how are you? I won’t play Cynthia. I want to play Tara, the lead.” Braxton Pope and Paul Schrader nod happily. They’d been tipped off by her agent that this was how it was going to go. They tell her that sounds like a great idea.

Wow. Christopher Nolan’s made no secret over the years of his love of the James Bond franchise; he named it as an influence on his first two “Batman” movies, directly paid homage to “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” in “Inception,” and has often said that he’s like to direct a film in the franchise at some point. But given that he’s one of the few directors who could greenlight absolutely anything, we’d always wondered if it was something of a pie in the sky idea, despite his enthusiasm – especially given that many, including Sam Mendes, talked about Nolan’s influence on “Skyfall,” the billion-dollar grossing last entry in the 007 series.

Whenever my mind wanders to The Shining, I see it as Stanley Kubrick’s own game of chess. The psychological and supernatural horror film is a playground for the mind and subconscious, toying with our notions of sanity and allowing viewers to vear off and spark up their own theories and find meaning in all the madness. And speaking to the horror genre, Kubrick once said, “One of the things horror stories can do is show us the archetypes of the unconscious; we can see the dark side without having to confront it directly. Also, ghost stories appeal to our craving for  immortality. If you can be afraid of a ghost, you have to believe that a ghost may exist. And if a ghost exists, then oblivion might not be the end.”

PSA: I am perhaps that rare person in America who has not watched a single installment of the “Fast and Furious” film series, which is somewhat shocking because I love bad cheesy movies and making Ludacris jokes. But this morning, I started listening to the latest episode of the “How Did this Get Made?” podcast which made me literally want to run out and binge watch them all. Seriously.

Comedians Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael along with actor Adam Scott discuss “Furious 7,” or, as they describe it, “one of the most important films of our generation”–though it’s really about the entire series. And it is absolutely hysterical. If you love pop culture, do yourself a favor and download or listen here.

I am one of those people who pay a lot of attention to music in film, and this is one of my absolute favorite scenes ever: “Crazy on You” by Heart as featured in “The Virgin Suicides.” I’ve always wondered if Sofia Coppola, who is a master of using music to illustrate her movies, was thinking about Heart when she wrote this scene. It is just perfect.
