My final presentation for my Digital Kaledo class.

We had to choose a brand to design a collection for and I chose my favorite of all SUNO NY!

Jamilla Okubo Spring-Summer 2014 for SUNO NY.

Jamilla Anyango Okubo S/S 2014

“The theme behind my collection, “Jamilla Anyango”, is transforming the style and drape of the Kanga Fabric re-interpreted into modern American, high end fashion-street style fashion inspired by the brand SUNO NY. My collection is inspired by my cultural heritage, both my Kenyan side and American side. My father is from Nairobi, Kenya, and my mother is from Washington, D.C. It is a mix of today’s clean cut style of high end fashion, and the traditional wear of the Kanga.

SUNO NY is a brand that  has worked with  Kenyan fabrics and designed a collection inspired by the style of the Kanga fabric.  A typical kanga in East Africa consists of a wide border (Swahili: pindo), the central motif (Swahili: mji), and the writing (Swahili: ujumbe or jina). Many Kangas may carry political, religious, and/or personality messages. I will design prints inspired by the kanga fabrics with bold colors. The season of my collection will be Spring/Summer. The inspiration behind my first color story “Jamilla Anyango” is the meaning of my first and middle name. Jamilla means “beautiful” and Anyango (my middle name) means “mid day” or “child born of mid day”. “Jamilla Anyango”, is full of bright, feminine, and playful colors that represent my perception of beauty inspired by the bright colors and motifs of the Kanga fabric. The inspiration behind my second color story, “Nairobi”, which means “place of cool waters”, is the beautiful landscape and earthy tones of Kenya’s wildlife and villages.  As for my second color story, “Nairobi”, is full of bright warm colors with a mix of natural cool colors.   The silhouette of my garments will be casual American wear with a geometric twist inspired by the drape of the Kanga fabric. The main fabric I will be using is organic cotton, which is the main fabric that kangas are made of. I will also use used poplin button-up shirt fabric, used plaid coat fabric, and cashmere. The sustainable concept for my collection is Up-cycling and creating job opportunities for low-income individuals in the United States, challenging the mainstream industry. I will use second hand garments inspired by designer Momo Wang. My marketed target ranges from young (ages 18-30) high end fashion supporters to just as fashionable consumers who appreciate the craft of up-cycling.”
