Review: Quest Peanut Butter Cups

The nice folks over at Quest Nutrition saw me Tweeting with someone I follow who had mentioned their protein bars, and offered to send me one of every. single. product. they. make.

STOKED.

For those who don’t know, Quest is one of the many companies you’re likely to see on shelves in the healthy eating/protein bar/supplements section of your local pharmacy/deli/grocery store/supplement shop.

I found out about the company over a year ago and on the recommendation from friends, have tried both their chocolate brownie protein bar and their chocolate chip cookie protein bars either as meal additions, or snacks when I have an insatiable sweet tooth at work.

Instead of just eating every. single. one. of their products in silence, I thought I’d try to help fellow n00bs like me (those two flavors are literally the only protein bars I’ve had in my life) decide which products they’d like to try, and how well they compare to the “real thing”.

First up? Peanut butter cups!

As far as how these compare to normal peanut butter cups? They’re quite a bit more dry than regular PB cups, and taste more as if they were made with dark chocolate, rather than milk chocolate. The best comparison I could make is if you homemade PB cups with the bottom of a fresh jar of all-natural PB (the bit that has a bit less oil than you’d really like it to have, as it was all at the top of the jar), and dark chocolate with a dusting of cocoa powder on top. Not bad, but certainly the normal PB cups have a better mouth feel overall.

Out of curiosity, I microwaved one of the PB cups for 30 seconds – HOLY CHANGE, BATMAN. The chocolate on top partially melted, making the texture a bit less dry and making me feel like I was sneaking something half-baked out of the oven. The PB part stayed pleasantly firm, so it was still possible to eat this sucker with a fork and not have the gooeyness drip everywhere.

Overall? I’d say 6 stars out of 10. The overall taste is good, but the product a bit dry… microwaving it helps and turns it into something that feels super treat-like, without a lot of effort. I’d happily buy these and stick them in the microwave if I saw them on sale at my local store.
