Marlene Dumas is a South African artist based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her art has been acknowledged globally and shown in exhibitions at some of the worlds most renowned galleries such as the MOMA in New York.

Dumas draws much influence from photographs/portraits and draws her subject material from a never ending archive of personal snapshots, polaroid shots and images torn from magazines and newspaper articles. Her paintings are never a literal explanation of a portrait, she takes inspiration from a certain technique or aspect in a source and applies it to her pieces. e.g, she may crop an original image, focusing on the colour scheme of a persons facial features and use only that segment of the source in her art.
