Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, as it is most commonly known, affects up to one out of 15 women, with the symptoms usually manifesting as early as the teen years. Women with PCOS typically experience highly irregular periods or heavy bleeding, increased levels of androgen, and cysts in their ovaries. Aside from the menstrual cycle, PCOS can affect a woman’s ability to have children, her hormones, heart, and appearance.

While the cause of PCOS is undetermined, experts believe that genetics and/or insulin may play a role. Many women with PCOS are more than likely to have a relative with PCOS. Additionally, insulin may increase the androgen levels in a woman’s body, which in turn can lead to ovulation problems and infertility.
