Today’s the kick-off for this year’s weekly Greenmarket at the NYBG, so I figured I’d chime in to let New York-area folks know what’s showing up on the tables this late in spring. Chances are you’ll be seeing similar offerings in other markets around the city.

Herbs are big right now, along with a few greens. There’s plenty of kale making the rounds, rhubarb stacked high, and bunched parsley, thyme, and oregano—all from Gajeski Produce in Riverhead, NY. On the sweet end of the spectrum, Red Jacket Orchards out of Waterloo, NY is offering plenty of apples and strawberries; that goes along with all the apple juice, apple butter, and apple sauce you can think to stuff in your fridge.

For dinner, Migliorelli Farm in Tivoli, NY has it covered with sugar snap and shell peas, garlic scapes, tomato juice (can you hear the Bloody Marys calling?) and sauces, turnips by the armful, and beets, beets, and more beets. If you’re wondering what else is being harvested in our area and when, our friends at GrowNYC have a super-handy chart available. Check it out!

In the meantime, our Greenmarket now runs each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with free Grounds Admission and free parking for Greenmarket shoppers on those days.
