21st December 2012, the end of the world?
The joy was great when our friend Aaron who we met about two weeks before at Buenas Cosas, joined us in San Pedro. And again when Lisa, one of our best German friends, came as well, just in time for the end of the Maya calendar.
(Juan tought us that the Mayan culture calls the 21st December 2012 the end of 13th Baktun. One Baktun equals 400 years, so the end of 13th Buktun means nothing more than the end of a 5.200 year era. Despite many infos on the net their is no 14th Baktun – the calendar starts again at 0 Baktun.)
As we were spending time with some Mayas in these days it was really interesting to see how they prepared the end of the current and the beginning of the new era. They believe the end of the calender means a change, maybe in thinking of the people, maybe in nature… of course the earth needs a change to survive, but who knows. The Catholics were the ones who promoted the end of the world in San Pedro, allegedly because they are afraid of too many people turning back to Maya believes and thus loosing the majority. We attended the Maya ceremony during the sunrise on 21st to welcome the new sun spending hours sitting around a fire. The Mayan leaders prayed in the local Maya language Tzutujil and offered bread, honey and hundreds of candles in the fire. After that we danced and shared Tamales and Cacao drinks… An unforgettable experience! And luckily we all survived :-).
