Ubuntu smartphone pushing for a record setting crowdfunding goal.

The team behind the Ubuntu Edge have set a US$32,000,000 goal on Indiegogo, and three days in they’re already up to $3.6 million. The top crowdfunding project to date in terms of money raised is the Pebble smartwatch at just over $10 million.

For an $830 asking pledge, the price is certainly pretty steep, although what the team are offering is certainly up there in capabilities. The 4.5 inch phone will feature the “fastest multicore CPU” available when funded, alongside a massive 4GB RAM and 128GB hard drive (yes, 128!). Dual-band LTE ensures connectivity in almost any 4G capable network in the world, and a silicon-anode battery claims to squeeze more energy into the same dimensions as older batteries.

While those are impressive specs, the phone’s main claim to fame is that it’s a ‘convergence device’, able to be plugged into any HDMI input and used as a fully functioning desktop PC running Ubuntu with shared access to all files on the device. The phone is also able to dual-boot Ubuntu or Android, with the Android OS able to launch the Ubuntu desktop from within Android using the existing Ubuntu for Android app.

If that all sounds a little confusing check out the Ubuntu Edge Indiegogo Campaign here for more videos and explanation.
