This kind of nuclear family model where mommy stays home and daddy works was literally conceptualized to oppress women; not only is it a way to control women and maintain their dependency on their husbands, but its a reduction in labor costs — or free labor — because women do not receive a wage for doing these things since they have been normalized culturally as, “women’s work.”

It also serves as a cover for the work a woman does outside of their home and denounces anything she does as a “hobby” or w/e because she is ultimately a ~housewife~ i.e. nanny, cook, maid, chauffeur, accountant, sex worker (for husband), personal shopper, and more. Like, women are literally 2/3 of the world’s labor force and they have to do all that shit too?

Everything about the housewife role defines capitalism’s relevance (or contribution) to sex-based oppression so literally anyone that supports capitalism is contradicting themselves if they also maintain they support ~equality~.

and remember that capitalism has always relied on the presence of free or significantly-below-normal-cost labour. inadequate recompense of workers is not enough. capitalism was built on colonial slavery practices (not just the transatlantic slave trade; enslavement of indigenous peoples was carried out around the globe, and the colonial powers at home enslaved their ‘unwilling poor’ in workhouses). today we have prison labour, and migrant workers whose bosses exploit their tenuous immigration status to force down pay and conditions. and underpinning all of this continues women’s ‘second shift’ of domestic labour, because don’t forget that women have always worked outside the home, that women too were enslaved and did the same backbreaking labour as men, but have always also been expected to come home and clean and cook and most importantly of all bear and raise the next generation of human beings resources.
