One week from now, on August 28th, Gonja will release their first album entitled Gonja Volume 1 at Urban Waves Records. Gonja is the new project collaboration between 2 producers from Boston, Tyler Dredz and Atwell Baker. The album will be available in both digital and a very limited green cassette tape.

For the occasion Urban Waves did an interview with Gonja, Tyler and Atwell gathered for this and answered the questions as a single entity “Gonja”

- Could you tell us a little bit about where you’re from?

G: The Dunngeon, Boston MA.
The Dunngeon is my apartment that I’ve lived in for most of my stay in Boston. There have been many wild nights and dope beats created there and it is a very inspirational place.

- When did you become interested in making music? Could you tell us a little about how you got started?

G: We both have been making music as Atwell Baker and T-Dredz for a couple years, but we started messing around together on the MPC last spring. We weren’t saving anything we were making at first, but one day we made a track we both liked and decided to start working on a project together.

- How do you know each other?

G: We met through mutual friends and through working on JASS.
JASS started as a monthly Boston club night in August 2011 and since then it has evolved into a record label. We have had artists such as Jonwayne, Teebs, Oneohtrix Point Never, and we are doing the 1 year anniversary show with Shigeto on the 28th.

- Could you describe your musical style?

G: Lo-fi cheeseburgers.

- Do you have a particular process when you’re making a track?

G: Each track is a short medley of beats we made switching off on an MPC, one sitting per track. Cheeseburgers for whoever’s on deck.

- What is your favorite piece of gear?

G: Grillmaster 4-burner.

- What was your state of mind in the making of Gonja Vol.1?

G: Dead sober.

- What are your future musical projects?

G: More gonja. Getting ready for our live debut with Shigeto, Djemba Djemba and Time Wharp at the JASS 1-Year Anniversary.

- What is your personal motto?

G: “Frig Off.”

- Would you like to make any shout-outs?

G: Cheeseburgers, Sir Froderick, Rawel and Beats & Cookies.
