Who’re you supposed to be, T-Shirt And Jeans Girl?: Regarding Cass and Renee

Guys, I KNOW you all want to see them return in a big way. I do, too!

It’s just not always easy to negotiate these things,…

Generally it simply means the character is being used elsewhere, or is in the planning stages of being used elsewhere. That is what I believe is the case right now, which is why I said this could be GOOD news. I just don’t know, I didn’t ask in this particular case.

Occasionally, but rarely, a character will be held back because DC or Marvel feels the character needs a break until they can bring them back in a big way…such as Aquaman, Hawkman, those sorts of situations. I don’t believe that’s what’s going on with Cass, I think it’s that she’s already earmarked for usage somewhere else.

Look, there’s nothing sinister here. Imagine that there’s a table, a big round table with hundreds of people sitting around it, and each person wants to color something. And in the middle, there’s a big basket of crayons, with one of each color. Imagine trying to coordinate that. That’s what’s going on at DC and Marvel every day.  You want to color something burnt sienna, damned if someone doesn’t get that particular crayon two seconds before you reach for it.

Sometimes you can share, and take turns, and sometimes someone decides to draw a huge pink elephant and has to have the pink crayon for the entire coloring session.

That’s what the companies are like with the characters. No one is deliberately trying to keep the characters away from readers who love them. But sometimes, the color you want is in other hands for a while.

I hope that makes sense!

That does make sense and thanks for answering thoroughly, Gail. I appreciate it.

I do know Fabian Nicieza has taken over re-introducing Cass and will be continuing to do so in issues 22-25 of Red Robin, if I recall correctly. So that’s my guess as to why she might be “taken.” I have a lot of faith in Fabian, he’s a wonderful writer and I don’t think there’s anyone better who Cass fans could ask for in re-introducing the character. He seems to get all of the Batfamily, including Cass and Jason, two characters a lot of writers don’t seem to “get,” and I’ve noticed he remembers to include them, if even just in a brief mentions.
