Andy Warhol famously predicted that in the future everyone would be famous for fifteen minutes. But for one of the most prominent artists of the 20th Century, fame was a complicated mistress. By turns, courting it, hiding from it, embracing the spotlight and retreating to a public silence, Warhol slipped the mask of notoriety on and off with startling frequency.
In that context, these photographs by William John Kennedy are a revelation: disclosing the early Warhol’s intimate relationship with his work; revealing more about the artist and the work through these intimate portraits.
