In the land of homemade pasta, buffalo mozzarella and artisanal gelato, with three (or four!) course lunches, and vino and limoncello at every meal, to experience the Italian way of life AND feel vibrant (aka sane), this one question keeps me mindful: Is my hunger gone?
Inspired by Michael Polan’s “Food Rules” and moderation-is-the-way chef @phoebelapine, I’ve discovered it IS possible to taste it ALL and feel great at the same time.
Small portions, switching the question of “Am I full?” for “Is my hunger gone?” and walking/biking/hiking everywhere are my approach to Italian life.
And you know what? I (with much surprise) feel better than my strict raw vegan eats. I’ve discovered it has less to do with what I do and do not eat, and more to do with HOW I eat and my inner dialogue about the eating experience.
And thus far, “I’m eating raw because it’s supposed to make me feel better” pales in compassion to “I’m going to mindfully enjoy and savor this meal, while listening to and honoring my body.”
