I’m a pretty visual person so drawing out a blueprint of the bow isn’t enough, I have to actually create a scale model to be able to conceptualize some parts of the bow’s construction. It took WAY longer than I expected; I’m going to say that’s due to the incredible challenge presented by how tiny everything is (sharpie included for scale) and the fact that my razor was tearing the foam so everything had to be done with scissors. The finished model should be about a 15 inches long, so it’s roughly 1:6 scale.
I messed up a lot but figured out what I need to change with the big version and I’ve pretty much decided that I’m going to be using eva foam instead of expanding foam… At least for the “faceplate”, I might use expanding foam for the base of the bow. Not sure yet!
Finished the bow model, probably not going to take the time to paint it since this was more of a proof of concept and test of how my 2D pattern pieces translated into a 3D model. The white foam is 3mm craft foam, the red is 2mm craft foam, and the handle is two sheets of normal printer paper rolled REALLY tightly and then taped up with scotch tape. Very high quality stuff, here, no expense was spared.
I took quite a lot of shortcuts with the limbs of the bow (as you can see compared to the modelviewer screen shots) since my biggest concerns were the “faceplate” and the fitting of the actual pieces together. I solved several construction problems while making this but a lot of the detail work wasn’t possible due to the small size of the model.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this project thus far, it’s that despite having dozens of screenshots of this weapon being used by my character, I cannot comprehend how this can be used as a proper weapon. The riser is utterly non-functional and there’s no arrow rest. Also, this bow is probably supposed to be used by a left handed person because the arrow is on the wrong side if you shoot it right handed. It looks cool as hell, though.
If I really want to do this right, I’m going to need to solve these problems before I start building the actual prop.
I am also unsure how I’m going to transport this to the con, considering the “faceplate” alone is roughly 2ft x 3ft when scaled up. Even if I build this so it assembles from smaller pieces, how the shit am I going to break that part down?? I was worried about the full size weapon being cumbersome, but the design is actually quite balanced and I was able to balance it on a single finger, so I doubt I’ll have much trouble holding the real thing.
I’m also leaning more and more towards the inclusion of a quiver in the final costume. I really liked that class accessories artcraft, plus it would be a good idea to have some sort of bag on hand to carry my shit in.
I might try figuring out some sort of harness to fix the bow to my back like in the game to make walking around with it easier. So many problems to solve!
GC stated these aren’t set in stone, but here’s the proposed Hunter talents for Mists of Pandaria…
Tier 1:
Frozen Arrows — Your arrows and ammunition are chilled with frost, causing your Auto Shot to have a 30% chance to reduce the targets movement speed by 30% for 10 sec.
Arcane Arrows — Your arrows and ammunition are infused with arcane magic, causing your Auto Shot to have a 50% chance to restore 5 Focus when it deals damage.
Venom Tipped Arrows — Your arrows and ammunition are mixed with serpent venom, causing a stacking poison damage over time effect on the target dealing Nature damage. Stacks up to 5 times.
Tier 2:
Silencing Shot — A shot that silences the target and interrupts spellcasting for 3 sec.
Wyvern Sting — A stinging shot that puts the target to sleep for 30 sec. Any damage will cancel the effect. When the target wakes up, the Sting causes 2190 Nature damage over 6 sec. Only one Sting per Hunter can be active on the target at a time.
Intimidation — Command your pet to intimidate the target, causing a high amount of threat and stunning the target for 3 sec. Lasts 15 sec.
Tier 3:
Posthaste — Your movement speed is increased by 60% for 4 sec after you use Disengage.
Evasiveness — Increases your chance to dodge attacks and resist spells by 100% for 3 sec when you use Disengage.
Exhilaration — When you Disengage, you are instantly healed for 15% of your total health when you successfully land.
Tier 4:
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera — Whenever you are hit by a melee attack, the cooldown of your Disengage is instantly reduced by 4 sec. Whenever you are hit by a ranged attack or spell, the cooldown of your Deterrence is instantly reduced by 8 sec. These effects have a 2 sec cooldown.
Aspect of the Iron Hawk — Your Aspect of the Hawk now also reduces all direct damage taken by 15%.
Spirit Bond — While your pet is active, you and your pet will regenerate 2% of total health every 5 sec.
Tier 5:
Fervor — Instantly restores 50 focus to you and your pet.
Readiness — When activated, this ability immediately finishes the cooldown on all Hunter abilities.
Thrill of the Hunt — You have a 15% chance when you use fire [sic] a shot that costs focus to instantly regain 100% of the focus cost of the shot.
Tier 6:
Flash Freeze — Your freezing trap no longer has a cooldown, but only one target can be afflicted by it at a time.
Black Ice — Increases the movement speed reduction of your Ice Trap by an additional 10% and when you move through your Ice Trap you gain 50% movement speed for 4 sec.
Transmorph Trap — Place a nature trap laced with a special toxin that will transmorph the next enemy into a beast reducing their movement speed by 60% and causing them to be unable to use any of their normal abilities.
