In May 2011, the Hub City Writers Project collected and distributed more than 3,000 gently-used children’s books for summer reading to children at three Spartanburg city schools. This year, thanks to a grant from the Mary Black Foundation, we will expand the program to five schools and intend to collect 5,000 books!

Bring good condition children’s and young adult books to these locations for summer reading for five local schools: Houston Elementary, Cleveland Elementary, Carver Middle School, Park Hills Early Learning Center, and Mary H White Elementary.

Spartanburg County Historical Association: Historic Home Tour, Cedar Springs Area

The Spartanburg County Historical Association’s spring Historic Home Tour in the Cedar Springs area on Sunday, April 22 from 1-5 pm features four historic structures - Foster’s Tavern (ca. 1801), Golightly-Dean House (ca. 1784), Lipscomb House (ca. 1922), and Walker Hall (ca. 1859). Following the tour, Association members at the Society membership levels are invited to a reception at the home of Dr. & Mrs. Julian Josey for refreshments and a brief history presentation by Dr. Jeff Willis.

The cost for the tour is $25 in advance and for Spartanburg County Historical Association members or $30 on the day of the tour, which can be purchased at any of the homes. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Regional History Museum in the Chapman Cultural Center, Carolina Garden World, Theodore Morris, and via www.spartanburghistory.org. Sponsored by Wofford Campus Union, the City of Spartanburg and the Northside. The 21 Artists ON Residence committee – consisting of four Wofford College students; community leader Wanda Cheeks; Lisa Gosnell, community services specialist with the City of Spartanburg; and Curt McPhail, program officer with the Mary Black Foundation – hopes to “help stabilize and revitalize” the Northside area “to promote and influence an encouraging environment,” the group’s mission statement says. “Our efforts will reduce crime, create a healthier, safer place to live, and encourage community engagement and pride in the Northside.”

The group is recruiting artists of all kinds and levels of experiences from Wofford, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), residents of the Northside community and residents of the entire Spartanburg community. The plan is to have the artists assemble from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, to paint plywood boards that cover the windows and doors of abandoned houses with images of “what positivity” looks like to the artists. They will meet at the corner of College and Mill streets, near the entrance to the VCOM parking lot.
